I have quite a few new paintings and sketches to post.  Today I’m posting some more small painting-sketches.  These could be considered studies for future larger works, but they are also (usually) little paintings or drawings in and of themselves.

The painting above is a further study into the basic organic forms I have been working with.

Continuing to Work Small on my Organics Series

This is one of my recent acrylic sketches exploring the structure of those organic forms in my head that I am currently fascinated to understand: in these images of interconnected solids among voids in a space of ambiguous depth, how are the parts connected; what is attached to what, and where?  I paint in order to see…

I should mention that I don’t think the color is completely accurate.  Sigh!

See more of these little sketch-paintings in my Organics Gallery.  And stay tuned for more in the not-too-distant future.

No, I’m a frayed knot

Another painting of mine has been included in a very cute Etsy Treasury, complete with a joke. Check out the whole beautful treasury, curated by Kendra of laylaloustudio, at this link on Etsy.

Looking Back at 2008

This is that time of year when I think it’s natural for us to look back and see what we accomplished (so we’ll know what to focus on next year, and what to pat ourselves on the back for).

This has been a really good year for me, artwise, and I think–even with this sucky economy–it’s only going to get better. Call it faith, call it hope, call it what you will. It’s a great feeling that has eluded me for far too long, so I hope to hang on to this feeling.

PAINTINGS

This year I painted about 50 paintings — which for me is a lot, as I also freelance as a designer/illustrator, and my clients have kept me very busy for the past few years!

Three new paintings

This has been a very busy month — the month began with transporting our paintings up to Fort Worth to prepare for hanging in the “Real and Imagined” show at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center, which took two trucks to transport all the work for the five of us in the show.

Five Austin Painters Show in Fort Worth

Jill Alo, Kathleen Claps, Linda Anderson, Bill Wahlgren and I had a big show at the Fort Worth Community Art Center on October 3rd (the day the Dow fell 777 points!).  A lot of people came for the opening, though perhaps not as many as we had expected.  But the place was pretty active all evening, and we had many great conversations with quite a few art lovers.   View a few pictures below that I was able to snap during the few slow times.

Nine new paintings

Now that I’ve finished my 7-month Succession Series project, I felt the need to paint fast and large, and with more control and precision than I can achieve using encaustics, so I thought I’d give acrylics another go. I headed out to Jerry’s Artarama for some supplies, and they had jars of Atelier’s Interactive acrylic paint on a close-out sale, so I picked up a few colors.

Wow! What a different medium. It’s very physical to paint this large and necessarily quickly, and still attempt to achieve some of the effects I enjoy. Yet, this has freed me up in another way, and I see my work evolving even more.
