New Work

Start of a New Series: “Fragments”

"Fragments 001" | Oil on canvas | 5" x 7" | © 2013 Marilyn Fenn - This year (so far), I am experimenting with lots of ways of finding images and lots of ways of painting them. This is the first of my "Fragments" series -- favorite snippets from larger works repainted on smaller canvases.

New Watercolor: “Splat!”

"Splat!" | Watercolor and gouache on Sennelier cold-press watercolor paper | 12" x 12" | © 2013 Marilyn Fenn - I thought I'd try out the Sennelier watercolor block I discovered the other day buried in my studio.  Watercolor is a medium I'm not terribly familiar with.

They Can’t All Be Perfect

"Wheeeee!" | Watercolor and gouache on heavy Raffine paper | 5.25" x 5.5" | © 2013 Marilyn Fenn - I almost had to throw this one away, but I think I more or less saved this watercolor with the judicious addition of a bit of gouache...and more stuff! FWIW

File This Under “You Gotta Try Stuff” — A Loose Study

Continuing my experiments with imagery: from earlier this year, this is a loose study in acrylic on paper for what may become a larger oil painting.  No real title, so far.  I like it.  :)

Another Early Experiment from This Year

This was my 5th piece of the year, and I’ve been holding off on sharing it.  I am again combining some imagery from various series of the last few years, this time in watercolor pencil (with water added, of course).  I may try to fix that purple-y bit…

I’m Still Here!

I have been working on some small oil paintings that are in various states of not-quite-doneness, and one 24″ x 24″ oil painting that is coming along quite nicely, but surprisingly, and I have 3 sketches ready to paint as watercolors.

For now, I thought I’d go ahead…

New Mini-Painting: “We’ve Got Company!”

Another New Mini-Watercolor: “Orbit”

"Orbit" | Watercolor on 100 lb. Raffine paper | 6" x 5.75" | © 2013 Marilyn Fenn -- For this painting, I picked a set of colors that were more subdued than my usual bright fare; I'm surprised at how bright they seem anyway.

Recovering a Watercolor Painting – “Dunk”

"Dunk" | Washed watercolor on 100 lb. Raffine paper | 6" x 5.75" | © 2013 Marilyn Fenn -- The problem with working in watercolor is if you get the colors wrong, there's not a lot you can do to fix it. Initially, I got the colors wrong on this one.

Art is not a skill contest, nor an innovation contest. Art is an honesty contest. If we can be precisely who we are, in the most intimate and candid and courageous way, we will start to connect to the universal. Our job as artists is to become powerfully personal in our work, and if we touch the source, the most central wound, the deepest of wells, then we actually touch the universal. — Ran Ortner, June 2012
