New Pieces on Website: Succession Series

“Succession 01 #4-2 (Pancake Ice)” | Oil on Canvas | 12″ x 12″ (part of 20-panel series, O.D. 48" x 60") | © 2008 Marilyn Fenn -- Check the new Succession Series gallery section of my website to see how the panels in this new series stack up and evolve from each other.

Pancake Ice: Third Painting in the Succession Series

“Succession 01 #4-2 (Pancake Ice)” | Oil on Canvas | 12″ x 12″ (part of 20-panel series, O.D. 48" x 60") | © 2008 Marilyn Fenn -- The idea behind this series is similar to the idea of ecological succession, which is a sequence of gradual supplanting of one community of (life) forms by another, each stage building upon the previous stage. This painting moves into circular forms inspired by ice floes that bump into each other, thus building up the edges of the forms.

Space Dancing: Second Painting in New Series

“Succession 01 #4-3 (Space Dancing)” | Oil on Canvas | 12″ x 12″ (part of 20-panel series, O.D. 48" x 60") | © 2008 Marilyn Fenn -- The first painting in the previous post below was inspired by an aerial photograph of cracks in an icy lake. This second painting evolved from the top edge of that painting, and takes a whirl into space with ropey forms dancing in three dimensions.

The Seed: Start of a New Series

“Succession 01 #4-4 (The Seed)” | Oil on Canvas | 12″ x 12″ (part of 20-panel series, O.D. 48" x 60") | © 2008 Marilyn Fenn -- Every time I take a class with the wonderful painter Andrew Long, my work starts changing...I took a class with him last spring, which helped greatly in the development of my rather freeform abstract encaustic paintings.

Starting A Painting a Day

"Green Day" | oil on canvas | 10" x 10" | © 2007 Marilyn Fenn -- I love the idea of doing a painting a day...whether or not I can is another story. Here's the first in awhile: an abstracted landscape in oil, 10"x10".  Not sure if I'm done with it or not...

Sometimes if you are working through the night you just stay up and don’t go to sleep until six or seven in the morning, and I feel like you have to take advantage of that groove you’re in. If you’re in the mood and things are going well, you just ride that.
