Reminder: the East Austin Studio Tour 2008 is this weekend, Saturday and Sunday from 10am – 5pm.

My work has really evolved this year. I have created over 30 new paintings, including one very large 20-panel oil painting, many large paintings in acrylic (so is that 50 paintings?), and small works in encaustic, most of which will be on display.

Fused Expressions

The ancient art of encaustic painting with pigment in melted beeswax takes on modern form with works created by over 20 members of the Austin and San Antonio TexasWax Association of Encaustic Artists. Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday, November 1st from 7-10pm. Food and drinks will be served, and we will have live music at 9:00pm by mediums.

Come and see the beauty of encaustic painting! I will have 4-5 paintings in this show, and the work from all the artists is quite varied and beautiful.

Want to find out more about encaustic painting? There will be an artist talk from 7 – 8 pm on Thursday, November 6th, entitled “What is encaustic?” — also at the Bay6 Gallery and Studios.

A year in the works, I am one of 5 Austin painters who will be showing at the Fort Worth Community Art Center for the month of October. East Austin Studio Tour

I just wanted to remind you about the East Austin Studio Tour coming up, which promises to be the best one ever!  I will have about 30 new paintings this year.  I should also have a small quantity of limited edition Giclee prints available.

While I’m no longer the furthest northwest of all the studios this year, it’s not by much.

There will be about ten artists in our very own neighborhood of Cherrywood/French Place, while beyond our ‘hood there will be another 100 studios to choose from, where you can view art of all types.

The tour is Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17th & 18th from 10am-5pm.  Several group studios will also have parties in the evening of the 17th.

I will have maps of the tour on hand.   Also, the books this year are being sold for $5.00.  If you would like to purchase one here, please respond to this email and I will see if I can procure enough to cover all of the requests I receive.

WAR-Artists Respond Exhibit

I will have a few pieces in a show titled “WAR-Artists Respond” at the Dougherty Arts Center from November 2 to November 27, 2007. The exhibit will feature the artwork of more than 60 Central Texas visual artists who’ve taken on the challenge to reflect on the meaning of war and our role in creating it.

An opening reception will be held next Friday, November 2nd, 2007, at the Dougherty Arts Center, 1110 Barton Springs Road, from 6 to 9pm. Poetry, song and Butoh dancers performing in the theater of the DAC will give emphasis to the visual art.

East Austin Studio Tour

I will be opening my home studio to the public again this year for the 6th Annual East Austin Studio Tour on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 17th & 18th from 10am to 5pm. This year, there are 210 artists showing at 120 studios!

I will have over 2 dozen new paintings on display, primarily in encaustic (pigment suspended in a wax medium), including many new abstracts, more paintings of tornadoes, plus hurricanes and other explosions. My paintings, plus prints and cards of both my new and my previous works, will be available to purchase.

Consider starting (or ending) your tour at my studio (my studio is likely to be the one at the most north-west corner of the whole tour area, as it was last year).

12 Buy 12 Show at Artspoken Gallery & Studios

I have had some of my work juried into the 3rd Annual 12 Buy 12 Show at Artspoken Gallery & Studios, from December 1 – 22, 2007. There will be an opening reception on December 1st, from 6 to 8pm. I hope you can come!

All artwork in the show is created on 12″ square gallery wrapped canvases (or equivalent). I will have several beautiful new encaustic paintings on 2″ deep cradled plywood in this show.

Blue Genie Art Bazaar

The wonderful people at Blue Genie will have some of my paintings, prints and cards available to purchase at the Blue Genie Art Bazaar from December 5th through the 24th in their new location — the Monarch Events Center, 6406 North IH–35, Suite 3100 (in Lincoln Village) — for the 2007 Seventh Annual Blue Genie Art Bazaar.

This year the show will feature over 80 artists and artisans, and be open for 20 consecutive days.

Austin Visual Arts Association 30th Anniversary Show – Closes in One Week

AVAA’s 30th Anniversary Exhibit closes next Monday, July 30th, at the Dougherty Arts Center, 1110 Barton Springs Road. Gallery hours: Mon-Thurs, 9am – 9:30pm, Friday 9am – 5:30pm, Sat 10am – 2pm, closed Sun. I have two lovely little paintings in this show.

More New Artwork

Since the opening of the AVAA show at the Dougherty, I have completed five more new tornado paintings, a painting of Hurricane Katrina seen from space, a new abstract landscape, and a kind-of goofy reworking of a previous encaustic painting…and the first four paintings in what I hope will become a very successful direction for me!

Tornadoes and Hurricanes

I find it very exciting to paint tornadoes and hurricanes. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of cloud-forms, and tornadoes and hurricanes represent two of the most powerful natural cloud-forms on earth. In using the medium of encaustic in a small format to paint these, I am realizing my long-term goal of straddling the space between abstraction and representation. For me, these paintings are paint first, and images second. By focusing on the beauty of these powerful, yet scary images, I am creating a tension for the viewer. I’m hoping people can look at these paintings of potentially frightening natural phenomena to see the beauty of their forms, and even more, the beauty of the paint as little shapes of color.

New Abstract Work!

Last week I began another new series which I am very excited about. These are the kind of abstract paintings I have long been attracted to, yet have somehow eluded my grasp. I took a great class at AMOA Art School with painter Andrew Long earlier this year — it was very unconventional, as we never once put brush to canvas, but through a series of exercises over the three-night course, he helped us open our minds to ‘find our own uniqueness.’ I believe this great experience is finally finding its way into my work.

Austin Visual Arts Association 30th Anniversary Show at The Dougherty:

A couple of my paintings have been chosen for the Austin Visual Arts Association’s 30th Anniversary Exhibit & Reunion, to be held at the Dougherty Arts Center, 1110 Barton Springs Road. The show will open on Thursday, June 28, 2007, from 6-9 p.m., and run through July 30. There will be music by the Atlantics at the opening.

I feel very honored to have had some of my work chosen for this show, as only 49 artists had their work chosen. More than 300 works by 111 artists were entered. Each work was rated individually by each juror, and artists names were not included in the presentation.

Latest Artwork

If you haven’t seen what I’ve been up to for awhile, I began working in encaustic last summer. Encaustic is a painting medium in which pigment is suspended in a binder of hot wax and damar resin.  The paint mixture is heated until it is liquid, and then applied to a surface, such as prepared wood or masonite.  The paint can be shaped before it cools or reheated and manipulated.

The two paintings I will have at the Dougherty Arts Center are two small examples of encaustic painting. You can see more at my website (the first 4 series are all done in encaustic): /marilynfenn/art/

Smaller Editions for Prints

I have decided to reduce the edition sizes of Giclee prints on all new artwork, beginning in 2006, from an edition size of 100 to 25; all previous work will still be offered in the original edition sizes; usually 100.

New Design Website

I have been kept extremely busy lately doing freelance web design. Lately, I’ve done sites for another artist, a musician, an interior designer, a energy brokerage company with 3 divisions (hence three websites). I have also redone the website for the Texas Society of Sculptors, on whose board I now serve, while I maintain their site and edit their electronic bi-monthly newsletter. All this in addition to the clients I already had!

East Austin Studio Tour

I will be participating in the East Austin Studio Tour this coming Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 18th & 19th from 10am to 5pm.  I will be opening my tiny home studio to the public for the first time for this tour.

I have over 2 dozen new paintings to show this year, many of them in encaustic (pigment suspended in a wax medium), including a new series of small paintings of Tornadoes and Supercells, part of a Global Warming project.  These have been a total blast to paint (so to speak) !

I also have several new abstracts in encaustic and oil.  I will be taking orders for prints of the new works, and will also have prints and cards of my previous works available, as well as many originals (abstracts, landscapes, and the ‘prismism’ series).
