Composition Number 2 - 2013 - Acrylic on panel - 8" x 10" - © 2013 Marilyn Fenn

I am returning to the basics of color, composition, form, and brushstrokes.  I like giving my new works breathing space.  I emphasize the brushwork and allow the brushstrokes to form the shapes — at times becoming one, like the blood and bones of Chinese calligraphic strokes.  I am pushing the boundaries of traditional compositions, and exploring color even more fully.

Like Merce Cunningham, for whom dance was falling and recovery, I push myself off-balance, so that I can recover in unfamiliar ways to create interesting compositions.  Philip Guston once said: I want to end with something that will baffle me for some time.

I want my new work to baffle me.
